What is the best savings or investment plan for new born?

Post by kakashi78 »

Hi all mentors and sifus,

Can you advise what is the best savings or investment plan for a new born? I wish to start a saving plan for my new born as soon as possible as she is due in dec this year. Is it possible to share what you have bought for your babies or kids in term of long term saving plan.

Appreciate your advice and sharing.

Thank you

Hi kakashi78,
1. first remember to get for the child a Comprehensive Medical Insurance plan that covers private hospital treatment and on an "as-charged" basis.

2. for saving/investment, really up to personal preference. I bought both of my sons UK Traded Endowment (with Capital Guarantee) and Land as well, since the time frame can be long (20 years).
Cheers!

Hi Kakashi78,

Most people will go for endowment thus start as early as possible. That’s a good move from you being a dad.

If you are savvy enough, you could also invest in other instruments (Stocks, funds, etc)

Cheers

I'm no mentor/sifu and would like to learn from all of you. As in long term stock market will be up, so will a dollar cost averaging plan on STI ETF (monthly or quarterly; using Philips SBP) for 20 years be useful to the new born babies??

Hi davnck,
such a regular investment plan leveraging on the Concept of Dollar Cost Averaging should work. I think Philip has a Share Builder Plan where it is possible for this to be done as well, where a person decide a fixed amount of money to invest.
Cheers!

You are most welcome thus we are here to share ideas and information.

Like what Dennis has mentioned, Dollar cost average does work in the market. It’s not text book theory but people have really uses it to become rich.

From professional only fund investor perspective, do combine with additional cash to buy more when the market is low and sell near it’s high or target price you like to have.

Previously, my mentor told me, it’s possible to use only funds to be millionaire investor coz couples of his oversea friends have done that over the years. Not necessary for the person to pick stocks in order to accumulate their wealth.

Philip ShareBuilder plan is also another good option to consider but do take note of their expense. It will be high if you only invest a small amount of money on a monthly basis.

Cheers
